It serves as an international symbol of quality, indicating that a beach, marina, or boating operator meets its stringent standards of water quality, environmental management, environmental education and information, safety and services, and social responsibility. The Blue Flag program aims to promote environmental awareness and sustainable development in freshwater and marine areas.

Certification Criteria:
To achieve the Blue Flag status, beaches and marinas must comply with a set of environmental, educational, safety-related, and accessibility criteria. These include excellent water quality, environmental education activities, safety services like lifeguards and first aid equipment, and amenities such as restrooms and waste disposal facilities. Criteria are regularly updated and expanded to respond to environmental challenges and the needs of the public.

The Blue Flag certification is valid for one season at a time. Beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating tourism operators must reapply each year and demonstrate ongoing compliance with the criteria to maintain their Blue Flag status.
