Cradle to Cradle Certified
Issuing Organization:
Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute
Label purpose:
Cradle to Cradle Certified is designed to champion safe, circular, and responsibly made products that positively impact people and the planet. It advocates for a new approach in product design and manufacturing, one that focuses on eco-friendly practices, recycling, and sustainable materials to create products that can be reused in a technical or biological cycle.

Certification Criteria:

Products are evaluated across five quality categories: material health, material reutilization, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship, and social fairness. The certification process assesses the sustainability and safety of materials used, the ability of the product to be recycled or composted, the use of renewable energy in production, responsible water use, and ethical business practices.

Target Industries/Segments:

The certification spans a broad range of industries, including textiles, fashion, beauty products, packaging, building materials, and more.

Certification Process:

To achieve certification, a product must undergo a thorough assessment by a qualified independent third-party assessor. The assessment includes a review of manufacturing processes, supply chain practices, and product ingredients against the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard. Following this review, products can be certified at one of five levels: Basic, Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum, depending on their performance across the five assessment categories.

Certificate Validity:

Certification is valid for two years, after which companies must reapply to maintain their status. The renewal process involves updating product assessments to reflect any changes and demonstrating continued compliance with the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard.

Benefits for Consumers/Producers:

For consumers, Cradle to Cradle Certified products offer the assurance that they are purchasing goods made with a commitment to environmental and social responsibility. For producers, the certification differentiates their products in a competitive market, enhances brand reputation, and aligns with corporate sustainability goals.

Sustainability Impact:

Cradle to Cradle Certified promotes a shift towards a circular economy by encouraging the design and production of products with a positive environmental and social impact. It drives innovation in sustainable practices, reduces waste and encourages the use of renewable resources, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable planet.
