Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)
Issuing Organization:
Marine Stewardship Council
Label purpose:
The MSC certification is dedicated to addressing the issue of unsustainable fishing and safeguarding seafood supplies for the future. It aims to recognize and reward sustainable fishing practices, influence people's choices when buying seafood, and work with partners to sustainably transform the seafood market.
Certification Criteria:
The MSC Fisheries Standard assesses if a fishery is well-managed and sustainable. Criteria include the sustainability of the fish stock, the impact of the fishery on the marine ecosystem, and the management of the fishery to respond to changing circumstances. The Chain of Custody Standard ensures that MSC-labeled seafood comes from a certified sustainable fishery.
Geographical Coverage:
The MSC Fisheries Standard assesses if a fishery is well-managed and sustainable. Criteria include the sustainability of the fish stock, the impact of the fishery on the marine ecosystem, and the management of the fishery to respond to changing circumstances. The Chain of Custody Standard ensures that MSC-labeled seafood comes from a certified sustainable fishery.
Target Industries/Segments:
The certification targets the fishing industry, including wild-catch fisheries and businesses throughout the seafood supply chain that handle, process, or sell seafood products.
Certification Process:
Fisheries seeking MSC certification undergo an independent assessment by third-party Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs) accredited by the MSC. This process involves a rigorous evaluation against the MSC Fisheries Standard, stakeholder consultation, and, if successful, certification. The Chain of Custody certification for supply chain businesses requires a separate assessment to ensure the traceability and integrity of MSC-labeled products.
Certificate Validity:
MSC certificates for fisheries are valid for five years, with annual audits required to confirm ongoing compliance. The Chain of Custody certification is also valid for five years, subject to annual surveillance audits, and businesses must apply for recertification to maintain their MSC certified status.
Benefits for Consumers/Producers:
Consumers benefit from the assurance that MSC-labeled seafood is sustainably sourced, supporting healthy marine ecosystems. For producers, the certification recognises sustainable practices, access to global markets, and the potential for premium pricing. It also enhances brand reputation and consumer trust.
Sustainability Impact:
The MSC certification is critical in promoting sustainable fishing practices, preserving fish stocks for future generations, minimizing environmental impact, and supporting the health of the world’s oceans. It contributes to the global effort to combat overfishing, reduce bycatch, protect marine habitats, and ensure the long-term viability of the seafood industry.
