USDA Organic

Issuing Organization:
United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)

Label purpose:
The USDA Organic label identifies food and other agricultural products that are produced through approved methods integrating cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity. The certification ensures that the items are grown and processed according to federal guidelines addressing factors such as soil quality, animal raising practices, pest and weed control, and use of additives.

Certification Criteria:
Products must be produced without the use of synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, and genetic engineering. Producers must follow the National Organic Program's (NOP) standards, which require detailed records of operations, a written Organic System Plan, and avoidance of most synthetic substances. Livestock must be raised in living conditions accommodating their natural behaviors, fed 100% organic feed, and not administered antibiotics or hormones.

Target Industries/Segments:
The certification targets a wide range of products within the agricultural sector, including crops, livestock, processed products, and non-food items that meet organic standards (e.g., cotton, flowers).
Certification Process:
Producers must apply through a USDA-accredited certifying agent, submit their Organic System Plan for review, and undergo an on-site inspection of their operation's procedures and practices to ensure compliance with NOP standards. Certification is granted upon successful review and inspection.
Certificate Validity:
The certification is subject to annual review, including an on-site inspection to ensure ongoing compliance with organic standards. Producers must renew their certification annually by submitting updated information and undergoing inspection.
Benefits for Consumers/Producers:
Consumers benefit from transparent labeling that ensures food safety and environmental stewardship, while producers gain access to the rapidly growing market for organic products. The USDA Organic label can lead to price premiums, brand differentiation, and loyalty among consumers seeking organic options.
Sustainability Impact:
USDA Organic certification supports sustainable development by reducing the environmental impact of farming, enhancing soil fertility, conserving water, reducing pollution, and fostering biodiversity. It aims to provide a viable alternative for consumers and producers who are committed to reducing their ecological footprint and supporting sustainable agricultural practices.
